Lightbulb Best Books to read - Inspiring and Spiritual
Hello Forum Friends,

I have been reading this book called "From the Agony of Spiritual Tests to the Ecstasy of Communion with God" by Radu Ionescu Heroiu. And I think it is truly amazing and touching.

Radu, the writer, speaks about this journey of inner transformation, facing spiritual tests, personal development and his relationship with God.

I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to go on his/her spiritual journey.

Which one inspired you? What is your favorite book?

RE: Best Inspiring Spiritual Books
The book, or rather a cycle of books, which are so far one of the most inspiring ones, is the "Aghora" trilogy written by Robert E. Svoboda.
Svoboda, an American student of Ayurveda - one of the first Westerners to be admitted into this field - recollects in this trilogy his life with a Tantric Adept, called in this book Vimalananda. Meeting between the two was provoked by the assignment Svoboda was given at school, which made him seek out various outlooks upon aspects of, including Tantra. Yet this meeting turned out to be something much more then that.

Vimalananda, a true Tantric Adept, living the life to its fullness, born to a rich family, with high education in several fields, introduces Svoboda, whom he has taken as his close friend and disciple, into the amazing world of tantra, with its most severe version - the path of Aghora. Clearly due to past life achievements, Vimalananda soon established a strong connection with Smashan Tara, and was able to move onto the next level - where he could function modestly in the common society - althought there was nothing common about this amazing, colorful, wise and witty character.

Three books - "Aghora - At the Left Hand of God", "Aghora - Kundalini" and "Aghora - Law of Karma", are bringing us to the world of Tantra, world of conscious life, amazing power - and effectiveness - of transfiguration. An interesting and easy read, while maintaining a high level of teachings and experiences described - a feat characteristic to this incredible Yogi Smile

Real Tantric, challenging taboos and ignorance at every step, devoted to humanity - although in a way not so obvious to a superficial witness, evokes great love and passion for spirituality, life and God Smile

(for an easy find I used Amazon links here, but it does not mean that this is the cheapest place You can find these books)

RE: Best Inspiring Spiritual Books
Another book that fits into that section is "Life of Milarepa". This book was recommended to me some years ago by a friend, as an example of Karma Yoga attitude. But that is only a part of it. Milarepa, a Tibetan Yogi, made the whole journey from the lowest pit to the heights of Liberation. Having committed greatest of sins (meaning receiving heaviest karmic luggage) - killing people using magic (comparable only with killing of your Spiritual Guide), he went off on a path of severe asceticism, under guidance of wise Marpa the Translator, managing to burn all that karma within single lifetime. Milarepa became the most beloved Yogi of Tibetans and the depths of compassion that he keeps bringing to the world are overwhelming.

RE: Best Inspiring Spiritual Books
"Autobiography of a Yogi" by Yogananda Paramahamsa is a book hadly needing a recommendation. An obvious choice for a spiritual aspirant or any person interested in knowing something about Yoga. Being the first Yogi Master who settled in the United States, his writings are very approachable and understandable to Western reader. An amazing story of his life, which inspires to follow the Yogic Path.

"Life after Life" by Raymond Moody

I highly recommend this book. In "Life After Life" Raymond Moody investigates more than one hundred case studies of people who experienced "clinical death" and were subsequently revived.

He found that most participants in the survey experienced unconditional love.

"The Art of Loving" - Erich Fromm

I have read that little book many times. It is one of my favourites.

Fromm writes about love being an action, instead of a theory that requires discipline, concentration, and patience, traits that are challenging to pursue in our capitalistic culture. Furthermore, the book explains that our society is trapped by a need for instant gratification, which creates long term suffering. Fromm believe's that love is the only valid remedy for our socitie's inner suffering and he expains how love is an art requiring effort and care.

RE: Best Books to read - Inspiring and Spiritual
I am quite surprised I haven't mentioned here this book already long time, but I correct that mistake right away.
"The Way of a Pilgrim" is considered to be a classic of Christian Orthodox spirituality, but I say it is a classic of spirituality in general, the Universal Spirituality.

The book is a recollection of journeys of an anonymous monk in XIX-century Russia, which was found and later published by monks from Mount Athos. The Pilgrim travels from place to place, guided by circumstances, and his main focus - mastering the inner prayer, the prayer of the Heart. With constant support of "Philocalia" - a collection of teaching of Fathers of the Desert (another amazing spiritual text worth studying), a bit of dried bread in his bag, constant inner utterance of the Lord's Prayer and experiencing numerous meaningful encounters on the way, his story brings great inspiration and amazing miracles. It is interesting to notice, that states he experiences are exactly the same ones as those experienced by Yogis of Oriental spirituality - thus proving the universal character of the spiritual path.

This book is a source of great inspiration, faith, as well as a great introduction into further study of a profound spiritual teachings of "Philocalia". The book exists in several English translations and is most often combined with it's equally valuable continuation - "Th Pilgrim Continues His Way"
